A young girl, working in an unhappy 9 to 5 job realizes that her life is becoming monochromatic, devoid of any colour or excitement. On her way to work one day, she passes by ‘a world of colours’ and unknowingly, her feet lead her into that world. Walking through this new world of myriad colours, she is fascinated with what she sees before her. In the spur of the moment, she decides to embark on an exercise quite uncharacteristic of her life so far. Armed with a few cans of colour, she takes a day off from work, again something she has not done before during her three years at work. She spends the rest of the day with her colours, mixing, matching and creating. At the end of the day, content with what she has achieved with her day, she contemplates what these colours mean to her.
‘A drop of yellow’ is a narrative short from director Anikait Malhotra. In this short six-minute film, Anikait narrates the events from a day of a workaholic young girl, that help her discover the magic of colours. Anikait starts his story of colours in a monochromatic world, very much like the one our protagonist perceives herself to be in. As the world of colour captures her imagination, we see her world come alive with colours Agile cinematography takes the viewer into the protagonist’s world, bringing to life the dull routine of everyday life in the beginning and evolving with the story to capture her sense of experiencing a life-changing moment later on.
‘A drop of yellow’ explores how often life can get stuck in a daily rut, and how a splash of excitement is all it takes to add colour to life. The film signs off with a lament on how much more we need to mix with others and create to make life colourful and complete.
