It is the end of the 16th Century. Two struggling theatre artists are forced by circumstance to give up their love for the stage and pursue more mundane but rewarding occupations. But, when a new opportunity arises, they cling on to it and happen to share the stage alongside William Shakespeare, the troupe’s new writer. Together with their hiring manager and actor, the four work together winning over theatre lovers of London with their plays. The four stick together through rough weather and fair, buttressing each other even when their lives are at stake. When their puritan landlord throws them out of his property, they pull the entire theatre and shift it across the frozen Tames overnight to erect a new theatre. And when they are forced to perform a controversial play before the Queen, they fear being put away for treason. A few years later, their theatre burns down in an accident and Shakespeare discloses his decision to retire from the theatre. Does their friendship continue even after they part ways? And after Shakespeare’s death a few years later, how do the friends deal with the loss?

‘Hemming and Condell’ is a narrative screenplay by writer Martin Keady. ‘Based on a true story’ the screenplay tells the story of the friends of William Shakespeare, who, having comprehended the genius of their friend, do what is necessary to enter his name into the history books in the manner that he truly deserves. Sticking as close as possible to authentic facts and historical facts, Martin weaves his story with all the elements that go into making an adventure thriller.  Martin in his writing defines each character, drawing out the traits and personalities while at the same time giving enough rope for the director and the designers to recreate the world in which the greatest playwright of all times walked the streets and performed on stage.

‘Hemming and Condell’, is a humble tribute to the two friends who recognized the greatness of the world’s greatest playwright and ensured that he is remembered that way for time immemorial.
