A daughter visits her parents for the first time after she had walked out of the house to marry her lover. The parents who feel cheated by their daughter’s decision have an uncomfortable time accepting her and her husband. The father of the girl is very bitter about the whole affair and vents his frustration by refusing to speak to the couple. The mother is a little more willing to give the young couple another chance. As the four sit through the uncomfortable reunion in an atmosphere thick with tension, the parents decide to give the guy a chance. During their conversation, they find him to be a nice guy. The father then contemplates as to why the girl would deal with things the way she did instead of approaching them with the news directly.
‘The table fan story’ is a student film by director Kaushal Shah. Kaushal tells the touching story of a family reunion loaded with raw emotions. For a student film, ‘the table fan story’ takes on a very heavy subject and handles it with all the finesse and maturity of a master craftsman. The shot compositions, the camera movements and the non-intrusive music bring to life the air in the room so thick with tension that you can cut it with a knife. The casting and the performance by the actors are a delight to watch as they bring alive the nuances of the awkward situation, they find themselves in. The director cleverly moves the film from what appears to be a linear style of storytelling to one that transcends the realities of time and space with just a couple of well-placed shots and some basic visual effects.
The film takes a deeper look at human relations within the family and how priorities change with time. Sometimes it is a struggle between one’s ego and love that causes unwanted pain where none needs to exist.
